Opportunity Title
2018 National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project
Project Description
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is looking to recruit volunteers to help count non-motorized road and trail users as part of an annual national data gathering project. The next count will be conducted in October 2018. We are counting at the following locations: Heritage Dr and Ravensworth Rd in Annandale, Magarity Rd and Peabody Dr in Pimmit Hills, Park Run Dr and Westpark Dr in Tysons, Richmond Highway and Huntington Ave in Huntington, Commerce St and Amherst Rd in Springfield, Beulah St and Telegraph Rd in Kingstowne, Town Center Parkway, New Dominion Parkway, W&OD trail and Fairfax Co Pkwy in Reston, George Mason Blvd and Univ. Dr in Fairfax, Rt 50 and Metrotech Dr in Chantilly, Rose Hill Dr and Franconia Dr in Alexandria, and W&OF trail and Gallows Rd in Dunn Loring. Purpose: There are plenty of methods used to count motorized vehicles, but there is little knowledge about the number of people that walk and bike in Fairfax County. These counts are essential in advancing active transportation because they inform planning and engineering professionals on the diversity of our transportation and recreation habits. Volunteers for the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project play a critical role in: 1) Building a robust and public database of pedestrian and bicycle use and 2)Identifying local and national trends in biking and walking If you are interested in being part of future bicycle and pedestrian counts, please apply for this opportunity. You will be contacted with additional information closer to the counting date in October 2018. Duties: Counting individual cyclists and pedestrians using a predetermined methodology. Hours of Operation: The count will be held in September 2018 on a Thursday from 5-7pm and on a Saturday from 12-2pm, rain or shine.
