Project Description
The Volunteer Court Advocate provides clients with emotional support and information about the court process in order to prepare them for their role in petitioning for a Preliminary Protective Order (PPO), either through the affidavit or the ex parte hearing. Purpose: Court Accompaniment/Advocacy services are provided to clients seeking a Preliminary Protective Order (PPO) through the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (JDRDC). The Office for Women & Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Advocacy Services staff provide advocacy from the Domestic Violence Action Center (DVAC) as well as within the Court Services Unit of JDRDC. The purpose of the program is to provide clients with emotional support and information about the court process in order to prepare them for their role in petitioning for a PPO, either through the affidavit or the ex parte hearing. Duties: The Volunteer Court Advocate will provide advocacy services within the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (JDRDC) to clients who are seeking safety and intervention from JDRDC civil court process, specifically engaging in the Civil Protective Order Process of petitioning for a Preliminary Protective Order (PPO). The Volunteer Court Advocate has a basic knowledge of the court process and is able to answer questions related to engaging in the civil court process. Advocates have no legal standing with the court. The Advocate encourages clients to direct all questions about specific legal matters to their attorney. Advocates are not responsible for the clients' transportation nor is the Advocate to transport the client to or from the courthouse. Benefits: Becoming more knowledgeable about the criminal justice process as it relates to victims of Domestic Violence seeking protective orders.
